Don Bosco Anbu Illam was started in 1988. It is dedicated to rehabilitate the street and working children of Salem, and to empower communities that are neglected. DBAI helps to mobilize the community through organization. Through the provision of sheltered education and skills training we work towards a holistic rehabilitation of street and working children.
Activities
Social Work: Rehabilitation programme for Street and working Children, Shelter Homes, Transit schools, Work for Youth at Risk (Orphanages), Job Placement Cell (Vazhikaatti), Shelter for HIV AIDS affected children at Namakkal.
Fact Points
High rate of Drop outs from schools.
High prevalence of child labor.
High rate of reported and hidden incidence of physical and sexual abuse of street children, run–away children, rag pickers, hotel working children.
Facilities for education and Industrial training for child laborers, drop-outs and children who never attended school
Lack of adequate shelter, education, technical training and home placement for street children, run–away children and rag pickers.
Intervention
Centre for drop-outs and contact centre is functioning in Salem.
Shelter homes are run by Don Bosco at Salem for 50 children.
Rehabilitation shelter homes are managed by efficient staff for 100 boys.
Transit School / Bridge Courses are being conducted for the street children.
Community organization(Child rights club , Youth club, Young women, Women sangams, Core/ Support group) programs are on going
Education (Non formal and formal) is imparted to 50 youth.
Skill Training
20 Boys - House keeping, Cookery and Fast food, Courier - delivery boys, Office in charge, Driver, Electrical-pluming, cycle repairing,
Girls - House keeping, Cookery, Old age, Baby care, First Aid, Tailoring are conducted at strategic locations at Salem.
Child line (Rescue and rehabilitation of children in difficulties / danger) facilities are available at Salem.
The Need
There is a need for a scientific survey of the exact number of child labor at Salem District.
Proper health and medical facility to the street children are to be created.
Counseling centre for the physically and sexually exploited street and working children should be started.
New shelter homes in the strategic locations of Salem town and the suburban areas.
Mass awareness , care and support programs for the HIV and AIDS victims of Salem district should be initiated
