A centre for rehabilitating the street children and child labor of Coimbatore

Profile 

Don Bosco Anbu Illam at Coimbatore is in the service of the street children of Coimbatore district since 1999. The Salesians of Trichy Province provide basic education, Shelter, basic necessities and protection for the run - away boys. The street children are reunited with their families. The youth who are rehabilitated are imparted vocational training and guidance. Don Bosco collaborates with the NGOs, civic bodies and actively participates with the community - based agencies in their efforts to improve the conditions of the families and children. It plays the role of advocacy with and on behalf of children and youth to raise the awareness in the district about the pitiable condition of the street children and the unemployed youth.

Activities

Social Work, Awareness Creation, Shelter Homes, Vocational Training Centres, Reach-out Centres. Rehabilitation of street and working children through  Non-Formal Training, Self Employment Programmes and Job placement. Childline(1098), Street Contact, Counselling, Community Based Organisations, Children’s Clubs, Task Forces, City Advisory Board(CAB), Networking with Government and NGOs. Intervention

180 Street and the working children of the Coimbatore District are involved in the process of rehabilitation at Don Bosco Anbu Illam.

100 Street children and Working children are given formal and non formal education each year.

100 children are trained in various vocational skills each year.

Capacity building for 50 dropouts is imparted to youth thrice in a year.

Medical and Health care is given to 100 street children annually and in times of emergency.                                      

Career guidance and job placement opportunities are provided to 200 poor youth each year.

The Need

There is a need for scientific data collection mechanism of the child drop outs in the district of Coimbatore.

Prevent and protect  the child labor in various sectors of the industry

Make available for the poor youth employable skills at Coimbatore and in the near by towns.

Create employment opportunities for the youth.

Creation of facilities for placement of the skilled youth.

There is a need for the Organization of the youth at the district level.

There is a need for the organization of poor women at the District level.

Impart awareness education on various health issues like HIV and AIDS among the people of the district.

Organize inter-religious youth cultural programs to bring in harmony among different communities.
