Report of the Technical Commission
Vision
Don Bosco Technical Institutions in the Salesian Province of Trichy aim at imparting technical training to the poor and rural youth for their sustainable livelihood thereby improving the Economic standards of the poor, rural people. While imparting technical education they will empower the youth with l life coping skills for their integral development and will enable them in turn to develop the society they live in.
Objectives
1. Impart training in technical skills through formal and non-formal, long term and short term schemes to the rural poor youth especially the Catholic youth.
2. Give importance to the character formation of the beneficiaries through value based seminars, exposure programs and group dynamic sessions.
3. Bring about socio-political consciousness among the youth to bring about substantial sociological changes.
4. Make serious effort to start many non-formal vocational courses, which will directly benefit the rural poor youth.
5. A job placement cell has to be set up in every one of our technical institutions and a responsible staff member placed in charge of it for follow up.
6. Catechism and moral classes should be integrated into the syllabus for at least two hours per week. Salesians working in the technical institutes should consider the teaching of catechism and morals as their primary duty (PD 96).
7. Efforts must be made to conduct campus interviews every year.
8. While imparting technical education that enables the youngsters to earn a livelihood, importance has to earn a livelihood; importance has to be given for arts and humanities that make our formation integral, by way of regular programs enabling group activity.
9. Life coping skills are to be imparted to the trainees through a well-planned program.
10. Hostel facilities will be provided to accommodate students or from the rural areas and from our mission centre.

INTUSTRAIL TRAINING CENTRES (ITI)
AMSAM - we have 3 formal trades Fitter, Electrical, Wireman, and 3 State certificate courses Motor mechanic vehicle, Welder, A/c Refrigeration Mechanic, then we started with new class rooms to students in order to increase the strength from 124 to 235. Last year (2008 – 09) we upgrade these trades from SCVT to NCVT now we have 6 formal trades and one SCVT and three non formal trades - Computer course, carpentry and welding Now the capacity of the institute is 310
LALGUDI – we have 4 trades namely - Electrical, Motor mechanic vehicle, Welder, Diesel Mechanic, with two units each and able to keep the standard up in front of the Govt. and local area last year. We built few class rooms in order to start boarding for school students also poor students in and around the village. We also started non-formal course computer course, cell repair course, advance welding. This year revive the Driving School.
MADURAI – we have Fitter, Electrical, Motor mechanic vehicle, Welder, A/c Refrigeration Mechanic, Electronics Mechanic, and Instrument Mechanic trades. In 2007 – 2008 started Printing Press and Computer training with SCVT pattern also boarding for poor students.
POLYTECHNICS
Kazhiappanallur - is a little hamlet close to Tharangambadi in Nagapatinam district. The Salesians of Don Bosco began to work in the Tsunami affected Tharangambdi from December 2004. After two years of service there, the need to empower the young through technical education was strongly felt by the Salesians. A master plan was drawn to start a polytechnic in Kazhiappanallur close to Tharangambadi where land was available with three basic courses such as - DME, DECE, and DCSE. Total strength for three years would be 612
KUTHENKULY
Don Bosco, Kuthenkuly Aims at imparting sound technical education To the coastal and rural poor youth, Offering them Diploma courses in the Polytechnic College as per the norms of the All India Council for Technical Education. We teach them skills for a sustainable livelihood and empower them with life coping skills So that as they develop themselves, They will also work For the development of the society.

NON-FORMAL TRAINING
Keela Eral
It is for poor village youth treads available are Welding, Electrical, Two Wheeler and four wheeler Mechanic, DPT, DCA, each course 20 students are admitted. Till last year District Employment Centre give certificate for the training. Now we get certificate from Open University System
Tiruppur
Don Bosco NEST - Vocational training centre for street boys, school dropout children mostly training connected to local area Tailoring, tailoring Machine repair work, plumbing, (Electrical) house wiring. It is six month course. Those unskilled girls brought and give them proper training made them skilled worker.
Pallithammam
We have training centre for poor rural youth Electrical, Audio & Video mechanic.
Dindigul
Don Bosco Community College, Dindigul
Community College is an alternative system of Education. It provides holistic education and eligibility for employment. It promotes job oriented, work related, skill based and life coping education and promotes strong industry-institutional linkage and ties. It matches education with employment.
Don Bosco Community college aims at empowering the underprivileged rural poor youth through need-based skill development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and the community.
The college offers the following one year diploma courses that are approved by the Tamil Nadu Open University
Montessori training, House Electrician, Fashion Designing and Garments Making, DTP Operator, Two Wheeler Mechanism, Bachelor of Computer Applications
Students strength this year - 124 students.
Activities done in this Sector in the past Three years.
Seminars conducted on Preventive system for the staff.
Value education & Human right education is made compulsory for our technical institute.
Seminar conducted for the principals on Human Right Education and Administrative skills.
Teaching Catechism by all the salesians & Catholic Teachers who are involved in educational ministry is made compulsory.
New recruits (Teaching staff) are given inputs on Preventive system of Education.
Regular meetings of the Commission and Sector are conducted in the past three years.
Initiative was taken for the documentation of the sector activities in province level.
Retreats and seminars were organized in the local level for the staff and students.
Parents meeting and regular staff meetings are insisted.
Counseling cell is to be established in all our institutes.
Career guidance is given with the help of Vazhihatti department.
Past pupils unit is made to function effectively.
The Salelsians and teaching staff give regular assembly talks to students .(Value based)
Efforts taken in the past years
The policy for technical institutions was redrafted and the final document was presented to the Provincial and his Council for approval. After approval, the approved document was sent to the institutions.
The scale of pay for staff was prepared and a uniform scale of pay in all our ITCs was implemented.
List of files to be maintained in every ITC was also prepared and sent to all the institutions.
Common Rules and Regulations for all the ITCs is being prepared and given to the ITCs and this will be printed in all the handbooks this year.
