MISSION

The Salesian Community at Kalkurichy provides pastoral care and services to the Catholic community.

HISTORY

At the invitation of Most. Rev. Jeromedhas Varuvel, Bishop of Kuzhithurai, the Province of Annail Velankanni, Tiruchy took charge of the Parish on 25 May 2017.

Having invited by the Bishop I made a visit to the place along with a few council members in March 2017 and felt that Kalkurichy is a good place for Salesian ministry. It was taken up for discussion during the Provincial Council meeting on April 05, 2017. The council accepted the proposal of the Bishop and forwarded the request to the Rector Major. The Rector Major approved the proposal in the general council held on 5 May 2017 and gave permission to establish a Salesian community at Kalkurichy.

Kalkurichy is a parish situated 2 kilometers from Thuckalay Syro-Malabar Bishop’s House where three of our Salesians are working just now. It is a parish with 900 families and one substation namely Paruthiaraithottam. It has several Pious associations and sodalities.  Most of the parishioners are deserving stone workers. The parish has two schools: one Tamil medium middle school under the administration of the Diocese and one English medium Kindergarten school under the administration of the Parish Council. The parish council directly takes care of all the administration of the parish. The Salesians need not worry about administration but they have lot of pastoral works in the parish. It is a fertile ground for vocation promotion and Youth work. It has a substation at Paruthiaraithottam with 80 families.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

PARISH: Kalkurichy parish consists of a main centre at Kalkurichy and a sub-station at Paruthiyaraithottam. There are altogether 630 Catholic families in the parish (550 in Kalkurichy and 80 at Paruthiaraithottam). There are 15 Anbiams. Around 250 children attend the Sunday Catechism. Parish has got various pious associations like Legion of Mary, Vincent De Paul, Altar children Unit etc. They have their regular meetings and animations.

R.C. PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS: There is St. Joseph’s middle school with 154 students and St. Joseph’s nursery and Primary School with 121 students. The Sisters of St. Montfort offer their assistance in the School.
